Yes, Melbourne Hosted Its First Dachshund Race

Oktoberfest has kicked off in Germany, but many places around the world also celebrate. In Australia they celebrated a little differently, hosting their first ever dachshund race.

Most of the participants were dressed up in crazy outfits and have been prepping for months. They have gone through costume fittings and endless amounts of training. Hundreds of fans showed up for the event that turned out to be a huge success and I am guessing this is going to become an annual thing.

Over 50 dachshunds participated in the Running of the Wieners race on Saturday in Southbank. The sidelines were full of humans and other pups cheering them on. They had events for mini, old, standard and disabled dachshunds. And of course, a best dressed competition.

Some of dogs dressed as racecar drivers, surfers, lifeguards and there was even a Where’s Waldo. The competition included 30 mini dachshunds, 6 standard dachshunds and 18 dachshund puppies. First place went to a couple dachshund dressed as Peter Pan. Second place went to two pups who were dressed as dinosaurs and dachshund dressed as a motorcycle biker took third place.

But the race organizer does have a purpose for this fun event. It seems like not many people realize that dachshunds are actually very fast dogs and the breed does not get enough credit since they are known to be overweight. But they actually can be very athletic dogs and this race proves that. Another great reason for the race? To raise money for the Dachshund Rescue Australia group. Plus this is all in celebration of Oktoberfest.
