College Travel Blog Explorer: Exploring San Francisco’s Castro District

When we started this college travel blog we had a lot of great places in mind to consider. Somewhere, at the very top of my list, was San Francisco. First of all, if you’ve never been to San Francisco you’re in a position where you don’t even know what you’re missing. We recommend you change the circumstances immediately here at Landings and Takeoffs, but in the mean time, we’d like to share our own experiences.

The Castro is one of America’s first gay neighborhoods, as baby boomers took over the area in the 60s and 70s to create a neighborhood catered to gay, lesbian, transgender,  and queer activism and tolerance. Even if you’re not under the LGBTQ umbrella, there are still many great things to do and see in San Francisco’s Castro.

Many of the houses on 18th street are very well-kept with differing color pallets,  like lavender and white instead of traditional colors. There are many neat little shops in the neighborhood, including the camera store which Harvey Milk lived above, and also became the hot spot for gay rights.

The Castro theater always plays new indie and art-house gems in on their movie screens, you can’t miss the old timey neon light sign.  There are also many dessert shops and fresh seafood joints around the Castro to keep any food fanatic satisfied.
