South Dakota is home to some great cities. Deadwood is one of those cities and the small town has a lot to offer. Back in 1876, the town was known as a rowdy mining camp. In fact, Wild Bill Hickok was killed here and Calamity Jane is buried at the cemetery in town.
Deadwood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and today’s main street is full of restaurants, shops and even casinos. Main Street located in downtown Deadwood is a historic street that still resembles the 1800s. It is a big place for gambling and visitors can choose from over 80 different casinos.
Mount Moriah Cemetery is the final resting place of some historic figures. Calamity Jane is buried and so is the murderer of Wild Bill. The cemetery is actually known to be the place where a lot of murderers are buried.
Deadwood started off as a mining town and Broken Boot Gold Mine offers visitors an underground tour. The mine tour takes guests on a path of old ore cars and through tunnels while learning mining techniques and how to pan for gold.
Old Style Saloon #10 is a bar and museum where Wild Bill Hickok was playing poker when he was murdered. The saloon puts on reenactments of the murder during the summer months. It is a great place to walk around and gamble a little.
The best time to visit Deadwood would have to be in the summer. It gets pretty cold during the winter months and they see a lot of snow. If you want to be able to walk around the historic town located in the Black Hills, you will want to plan a vacation during the summer.
