San Francisco: Brunch and Basketball in the Bay
San Francisco is probably my favorite American city for brunch, by far the most underrated meal of the day. My busy schedule permitting, I always make sure to stop by Mama’s near North Beach. I managed to get there just before the regular crowds arrived and ordered a fresh mimosa straight away. After two weeks straight of work, I think I earned it!
The eggs benedict at Mama’s are legendary, but they add a unique California twist by adding fresh crabs. If you’re a seafood fan, brunch gets no better. After I stuffed my face and sipped on another mimosa, it was time to hit the city.
It was a beautifully clear morning in the Bay Area, some of that trademark fog that makes the place so iconic just creeping out toward the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s like walking through a story book in places.
I wisely left the heels at home, the sloping hills around every narrow street is just murder on your feet. After walking a few blocks I felt like I really earned my brunch. Feeling guilty has no place on vacation.
I consider myself a fitness freak so although I was game for walking anywhere and everywhere, for the sake of enjoying the full San Fran experience, I hopped aboard the first trolley that came my way. Let me tell you, if you really want to fall in love with the layout of SF and the architecture, this is fastest way to do it.
One of the more silly things I did while in the city was visit the area where Full House was filmed. I’ve been to San Francisco a few times now thanks to work – as you might imagine, this wasn’t very high on my priority list early on. This time I had no detractors to stop me, I got to witness the Tanner household in all its former glory. I actually think there’s a family living there now!
Okay, so obviously I didn’t plan out my day in San Francisco because I had bigger plans that evening – a friend from work set me up with tickets to see the Golden State Warriors play my hometown Houston Rockets. I got a few jeers for my James Harden jersey inside Oracle Arena, but that was pretty much expected.
It was actually a great game although my boys lost, 102-99 – so close! Those Warriors fans are loud, my ears were still ringing for some time back at my hotel.
I still have some time out here so I was non-committal about making a night of it following the game. Sometimes a great book and cheap wine are everything you need for a perfect nightcap.
Can’t wait to scope out some of the amazing happy hours tomorrow afternoon!
