The Black Hills of South Dakota is a great place to visit to beat the heat. Especially during the 1st week of August, that is when Sturgis hosts their annual motorcycle rally and this year is supposed to be one of the biggest of all time.
The 75th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally kicks off on August 1st and lasts about 7 days. There is so much to do not only at the rally, but also at other surrounding cities.
I have been to Sturgis a few times because I have friends that live not far in Rapid City. But I have never been for the rally. I know that during the summer, the weather is gorgeous. You can expect to see highs in the 80s and usually a thunderstorm or two while you are there for the rally.
Sturgis has a population of about 7,000 people. But during the time of the rally, the population grows to around 250,000 people. One of the biggest staples of the rally is Buffalo Chip. This is a well-known campground and is home to some awesome concerts. The rally always brings a good lineup of rock bands. This year, Alice Cooper, Styx, Lynard Skynard and more will take the stage.
Main Street is another well-known staple of the rally. This is where many bikers park their bikes. You can walk down rows and rows of motorcycles while mingling and stopping at the vendors and food trucks that line the street.
If you want to get away from Sturgis for a little but, there are some cool places not far from there. One of my favorites is Mt. Rushmore. This historical landmark is a must see. It really is a true masterpiece. You can also head down to Deadwood for some gambling and great local shopping. There are also delicious restaurants and plenty of sight seeing stops.
The Black Hills offers a lot of fun activities in a beautiful setting. Plus, the weather is perfect during the summer months!
