Things You Didn’t Know About Miami

Miami is famed throughout the world for its pristine sandy beaches, cultural diversity and vibrant nightlife. It’s a unique city that blends American beach values with a diverse range of Latin American culture. Yet if you look beyond the postcard image of Miami, you will find a city that is so much more than just a beach.

Everyone knows about the beauty of not only Miami Beach, but also the people who flock to it. Lesser known, however, are the architectural gems aligning the shore. Dating back to the 1920s, Miami Beach is home to over 800 stunning Art Deco hotels and apartments. Staying in one of these buildings gives you a great base for your stay in Miami Beach. Prices can be surprisingly good. In fact it takes just a little research and you will be able to find quality, cheap hotels in Miami Beach.

There’s a common perception that Miami is solely a beach city yet Miami is surrounded by not one, but two national parks and is the only US city to boast that claim. Biscayne National Park and the Everglades National Park allow visitors to experience a trip even wilder than a night out in Downtown Miami. Away from the national parks, Miami is home to hundreds of smaller open spaces, where you can enjoy many activities from hiking to fishing whilst basking in Miami’s sunny climes.

With over 250 days of sunshine a year, Miami is heaven for sun worshippers. It’s also heaven for scuba diving enthusiasts. Known as the “Wreck Diving Capital of the Americas”, snorkelers are spoilt for choice in uncovering Miami’s maritime past.

Miami’s past is just as fascinating as the modern day city. Miami Beach wasn’t always the thriving city we know today. In fact, Miami was once just a swamp. It wasn’t until the 1920s when Julia Tuttle instigated the expansion of the railroad to Miami that the modern day city started to form. Tuttle is responsible for the Miami we know and love today. Known as the “Mother of Miami”, Tuttle is the only woman to plan a city in the USA. You can find out more about Miami’s past by visiting The Museum of HistoryMiami.

So, whether you’re relaxing at the beach, losing your inhibitions in a bar or wandering the stunning parks, Miami is a city that will inspire and surprise you on a daily basis.
