Four Reasons Families Should Visit Richmond

Richmond, Virginia, is one of the most picturesque and historic cities in America. During the fall, visitors can gaze at the changing leaves contrasting against brick buildings or hike through endless nature trails in the summer. Richmond is a great option for families, because young kids, teenagers, and parents can all find something they enjoy. Here are four reasons Richmond should top your list of road trip destinations this summer.

The Riverfront Canal Cruise Offers History and Adventure

The Riverfront Canal Cruise Offers History and Adventure

Families can hop aboard a river canal ferry and enjoy a 40-minute cruise down the James River and Kanawha Canal. Kids who can’t get enough of planes, trains, and boats will love coasting down the river while parents will be interested in learning the history of Richmond. These ferries operate from April to November and leave every hour. All boats are handicap accessible.

Kids who enjoy the riverboat cruise can also enjoy the RVA Trolley. Richmond is home to the first trolley system in the world, founded in 1888, which means riders are sitting on history as they travel across town.

Families Can Watch Civil War History Come to Life

In Richmond, parents and kids can see their history books come to life at one of the several historic locations around town. The Black History Museum was opened in 1991 within a house built in 1832. This museum highlights the achievements of African-Americans in Virginia and tells their stories of survival as slaves in the South. The American Civil War Museum is housed in the 1861 Gun Foundry and offers multiple perspectives so visitors can truly understand what life was like during this time period.

These Are Plenty of Parks Around the James River

During the summer months, visitors and locals alike flock to the James River for picnics, swimming, and kayaking. Families with younger children can find safe swimming areas to wade in, while teenagers and older kids can kayak down rapids near Brown’s Island. Before it gets too hot, check out some of Richmond’s hiking trails to spot some local fauna or bike past some breathtaking views in R. Garland Dodd Park.

Families can also sign up for biking or kayaking tours lead by expert guides. These tours can accommodate people with any activity levels, so you don’t have to be a professional athlete to enjoy an afternoon by the water.

Many Hotels Are Centrally Located

Many of the hotels in Richmond are centrally located so families can easily visit some of the top sites in the area. Richmond has a thriving tourism scene, which means hotel owners have the right accommodations for families. You can easily find hotels with connecting rooms or suites that can fit parents and kids alike. Many hotels have complimentary breakfast bars and indoor or outdoor pools so your kids can play.

There are plenty of museums, historic sites, and outdoor activities to try when you’re in Richmond. Make sure everyone in your family gets to do their top pick so everyone can have fun during your stay. You may have to extend your trip because there’s much to do!
